About the NJ Grief Collaborative

We are a coalition of New Jersey’s leading family bereavement centers — united by a shared purpose: to support schools, educators, families, and communities as they navigate grief and loss with confidence and compassion.

Our Mission

Ensure schools and communities are equipped with the proper knowledge and tools to effectively teach students about loss and grief and are aware of the available community resources for support.

Our Vision

Creating grief-informed schools and communities all across NJ where grief is seen as a natural response to loss and students can learn how to cope with their own losses and know how to support others coping with loss.

Who We Are

The NJ Grief Collaborative is a collaborative of New Jersey’s Family Bereavement Centers supporting schools and communities as they support children and families coping with loss.

Our member organizations have spent years walking alongside children and families who are grieving and the educators who serve them. Together, we bring that experience directly into schools through training, resources, and consultation, so that implementing grief education feels manageable, not overwhelming.

Why We Came Together

The NJ Grief Collaborative formed in response to the passing of New Jersey’s grief education legislation, united by a shared concern for students coping with loss.

The five grief support organizations that make up the Collaborative share a commitment to supporting educators who are required to implement the grief bill, and a larger commitment to supporting students, families, and community members coping with loss.

We also recognize that loss is a universal experience and that communities across New Jersey need access to accurate, current, and grief-informed resources to meet the mandate with confidence.

How We Work Together

The NJ Grief Collaborative is more than a name — it’s an active working partnership. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

POINT 1

Collaborative Knowledge, Shared Resources

The resources available on this site are the result of collaboration, shared knowledge, and years of experience in partnership with others in the field.

POINT 2

Professional Development & School-Based Support

The Collaborative develops professional development and school-based offerings through quarterly meetings — sharing best practices, discussing emerging community needs, and solving challenges together.
